Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is a system of medicine that has evolved from human Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which has been documented for thousands of years. TCM is a comprehensive approach that factors in not only the condition of the individual, but also how overall health relates to environmental factors, changes in season, the balance of the internal organs, and the balance of yin, yang, qi, blood, and shen. In this way, TCVM is considered a more holistic approach. TCVM consists of four branches: acupuncture, herbal formulas, food therapy, and Tuina massage. TCM consists of a fifth branch, which is qigong. TCVM treatment is targeted to your pet’s unique condition.
Holistic Medicine
Holistic medicine focuses on the patient as a whole and how the different systems are interconnected.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a time-tested technique in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) that involves inserting thin, sterile needles at specific points on the body. This stimulates natural healing, improves circulation, and helps restore balance in your pet’s system. Acupuncture is commonly used for pain relief, mobility support, and overall wellness.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese herbs may be recommended for your pet’s condition. These formulas are prescribed based on your pet’s specific condition, and take into consideration the balance of yin, yang, qi, blood, shen, and the internal organs. Unlike pharmaceuticals, which may be damaging to the internal organs such as the kidney, liver, and digestive tract, Chinese herbs are nourishing to the internal organs when prescribed and used appropriately.
Food Therapy
Food therapy in TCVM focuses on using nutrition to maintain health, manage diseases, and restore balance. Each food has specific energetic properties (warming, cooling, or neutral) that can be used to address your pet’s unique health needs.
Tuina massage
Tuina Massage stimulates acupuncture points without needles. I can demonstrate some basic techniques you can use at home in between sessions.
